Create a case and add footage

A case is a folder; footage can be copied into it or left where it is, including on an external drive.

Each case has its own folder and its own database. Footage, events, notes and reports from one case cannot end up in another, and deleting a case removes only that case. On a single machine that is the whole story. On an enterprise deployment the workstations are connected, and where your agency allows it and your administrator has configured it, investigators can reference one another's cases for further analysis — the separation between cases still holds; what changes is who can be given access to them.

Create the case

  1. On a new install the app opens on Start your first case; click Create a case. Later, open the case picker at the top (the folder icon with the current case name) and click New case.
  2. Give it a Case number / name — for example 2026-0912 — Rivera — and click Create case.
  3. The app lands on Case info. Fill in what you have: case number, status, type, date opened, client, investigator, subject, location and the objective. Click Save case details. All of it is optional, and the client, objective and investigator are what the report's letterhead and first lines use.

Notes added on this tab are stamped with your name and the time. They stay private unless you switch on Include in report on a note.

Add footage

Open the Footage tab. There are two ways in, and the analysis and the export are identical either way — the only difference is where the original file sits while you work:

  • Drag a video onto the drop zone to copy it into the case folder. The case is then self-contained; you can delete the file you dragged from.
  • Browse to link a file instead of copying to use the file where it already is — on an external drive, say — with no copy made. If that drive is unplugged later, the events and clips still work; only playing the full original waits until it is back.

MP4, MOV, AVI and MKV are accepted, at any length. Add as many files as the case needs. There is no cap on file size or on how many files a case holds.

The recording's start time

If the file does not carry the time it was recorded, the footage row asks When does this footage start?. It is optional — the analysis does not need it — but with it set, the timeline and the report can show clock times rather than only offsets into the file, and saved section templates (6 pm to 6 am, say) can be applied to this file. Type six digits, 180932 for 18:09:32, and click Set.

When footage goes offline or is archived

A linked file whose drive is unplugged is marked footage offline; nothing is lost, and Locate… re-links it from wherever it is now, matched by a fingerprint of the file itself. When a case is finished, Case info → Archive footage moves the original out of the case folder (or just removes it) while every event, clip, still, description and note stays — the analyzed output is typically under 4% of the footage's size.
