Sections and zones: analyze only what matters
Pick the hours worth scanning and the part of the frame worth watching. The single biggest lever on time and cost.
If the subject leaves for work at seven, the six hours before that are not evidence of anything, and a public road at the edge of the frame produces traffic all night. Sections (when) and zones (where) tell the analysis to skip them. Both are set before a run from Select sections… on the footage row, and both can be saved as templates for the next file.
Sections — when
- In Select sections to analyze, play or scrub the footage with the bar below the video (ticks move the playhead; 1×, 2×, 4× and 6× speeds).
- Drag along the bar to add a section. Add as many as you need; click one to select it, Split at the playhead to divide it, Delete to remove it.
- The tiles update as you go: Kept, Skipped, Est. analysis time and Est. credits. Click Analyze N sections — or Save for later to keep the selection without running yet.
Save as… on a section keeps it as a template by clock time — overnight, say, as 22:00 to 06:00 — and + From template applies it to any later file whose start time is known. If this file's start time is not set yet, the dialog asks for it right there.
Zones — where
- Switch to Zones (where) at the top of the dialog.
- Click Draw zone, then click on the video to place the corners of the area. Choose Include (analyze only inside it) or Exclude (ignore everything inside it). Undo point steps back a corner.
- Each zone can have its own motion sensitivity — Same as video, Standard, High or Max — and can be saved with Save as… for reuse.
Zones are applied while scanning, so excluded movement never becomes an event in the first place. On the footage row the scope shows as, for example, ✂ 2 sections and ⬡ 1 zone; after the run, View sections & zones shows what was used. Change either and the row says not applied — re-analyze until you run again.
