License plates
The app reads license plates for you, and lets you search by part of a plate.
When a vehicle appears, the app tries to read its license plate. It's free and happens on your computer. The plate shows next to the vehicle in each event, for example Parked car H47PSP, and appears in the report.
Search by plate
Type a plate into the search box on the Events tab. You only need part of it — even the last three characters — to find every event with that vehicle.
Check every read
Each plate is marked with how sure the app is. Always check it against the picture. If a plate was visible but too small or blurry to read, the app says too small to read instead of guessing.
What makes a plate readable
It's less about distance than about how clear the plate is in the picture. A zoom or high-resolution camera can read plates much further away than a typical wide-angle camera.
- Big enough — the plate needs to be at least about 40 pixels wide in the video.
- Sharp — a car driving past quickly may be blurry, so only part of the plate is read. That part is often enough to search on.
- Well lit — headlights or night-time glare can wash a plate out.
- Facing the camera — a plate seen at a sharp angle is harder to read.
